Our Nail Care Routine: Nails 101

Getting your nails done isn’t all about fancy nail art and pretty embellishments. If you miss people saying ‘Wow, I love your nails!’, then you’ll most likely need to invest some time into a nail care routine.

Whether you want to improve the condition of your natural nails or need the lowdown on how to make your nail extensions look fresher for longer, we’ve got you covered with our step-by-step nail care routine. Read on for all of our tips and tricks on how to achieve fresh and fabulous nails.

Natural Nail Care Routine

nail care routine

Embracing your natural nails is definitely in right now. It doesn’t matter if you have short nails or plan on growing them out, there are various ways you can improve their overall health and look.

Healthy nails should be a light pinkish colour with visible cuticles and a prominent lunula at the nail base (this is the semi-circular white section). If your nails are splitting, swollen or have horizontal grooves, these are all signs of unhealthy nails. Adverse effects like these can be as a result of many factors, from biting the cuticles to more serious concerns such as a vitamin deficiency.

Follow our perfect natural nail care routine and say bye-bye to crusty cuticles and damaged nail beds:

Eat protein-rich food

Altering your diet to more protein-rich foods will not only improve your overall health but will leave your nails looking lovely too. Nails are made of protein, so increasing your intake of foods such as lean meat and fish will help them to grow long and strong.

Don’t eat meat? No problem! Eating plenty of fruit and veg, especially superfoods such as blueberries and kale, will boost your vitamin levels and release antioxidants that will all contribute towards healthier nails.

TOP TIP: If you like a pint of beer now and then, that’s not such a bad thing for your nails – result! Wheat-based beer is rich in silicon, which is just what you need for stronger bones and nails.

Grooming

nail care routine

Achieving healthy nails isn’t all about what you put in your body. Looking after the exterior of your nails will improve their overall appearance and can also help them grow too.

File and clip the nails regularly to smoothen out any nicks and make all lengths even. This will prevent your nails from getting caught on any surfaces which could result in breakages.

When filing, avoid a sawing motion and instead file in one direction only, from side to centre. This technique will produce a clean cut rather than frayed edges.

Don’t clip the nails too short as this can cause tenderness and possibly even infection. Soak the nails in warm water to soften their texture, then trim each one following the natural shape of the nail.

Avoid Clipping Cuticles

Trimming the cuticles is done solely for cosmetic reasons and should generally be avoided. Removing the cuticles leaves your nails exposed to bacteria and infection.

When cutting the cuticles at home, you also run the risk of cutting them improperly with unsanitized tools, which will increase the risk of infection further. Leave them alone!

Practice Nail Strengthening

Nail strengthening treatments can help to improve the quality and length of your natural nails. You can purchase these ready-made or try your hand at making your own. A simple age-old remedy of 3 tbsp of olive oil and 1 tbsp of lemon juice heated in a microwave, is enough to brighten and strengthen weak nails.

Hydrate your nails and fingertips with a moisturiser that’s infused with plenty of natural oils to prevent them from looking dry and flaky. There’s plenty on the market so do your research to find one that’s best suited to your nails and skin type.

Choose a Good Nail Polish

Avoid nail polishes that contain harsh chemicals as much as you can. Harmful chemicals, such as Formaldehyde, can be found in many nail polishes and can damage and dry out your gorgeous nails. Read the ingredients and avoid toxic chemicals such as DBP and Toluene.

Remember, always use a base coat before applying any nail polish, especially bright colours, to avoid staining your natural nails. Check out Posh Look’s Gel Polish Ranges and have them delivered straight to your door.

Go Natural

Give your nails a break! Put down the polish and enjoy going au naturale for a while – your nails will thank you for it. This will allow you to groom, buff and moisturise your nails frequently so they’ll be in the best condition of their life.

Be Gentle

Avoid heavy lifting and unnecessary actions if you want to prevent chipping or breaking your nails. Simple things like wearing gloves when washing up or using the end of a spoon to open cans will all reduce the risk of nail damage.

Maintaining Extensions

gel nails

So, you’ve had your nails done and they’re looking gorgeous. But how do you keep them in tip-top condition for as long as possible? We’ve compiled a list of our top prep tips and aftercare routines to make your extensions look amazing for weeks on end.

Choose a Suitable Length

When choosing your acrylic or gel length it can be tempting to go super long and glam. Consider the practicality of your nail length before making your decision. If you have a manual job, it’s going to be a challenge to keep long nails in good condition and you may end up with some painful breakages.

Fake Tan before your Appointment

If you’re partial to a bronzey glow, make sure you fake tan before your nail appointment. You don’t want to spend all that time in the nail salon then mess up your gorgeous manicure with fake tan stains. Plus, your hands will be ready and prepped for those beautiful Insta snaps of your new set.

If you need to fake tan after you’ve had your nails done, make sure you wear gloves!

TOP TIP: Use an SPF to protect your hands from the UV rays that are emitted during the lamp setting process. This can reduce premature ageing and the harmful effects of radiation.

Avoid Oil-Based Products

nail care routine

Moisturisers, fake tans and body creams containing Lanolin or Mineral Oil are known for breaking down the bonds of your nail extensions. As a result, you’ll experience weak and lifted nails and they won’t last anywhere near as long.

HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t moisturise. Invest in a good cuticle oil that’s rich in fatty acids and apply daily to avoid drying out and brittleness.

Avoid Picking and Lifting

Speaking of lifting, avoid picking at your nails as this will cause water and bacteria to settle under the nail. It can also be very impractical to wear lifted nails as they can become trapped in hair and clothes easily.

Get Infills

How often you get infills to keep your nails looking fresh, depends on the rate of your natural nail growth. A good set of acrylic or gel nails should last around 3-4 weeks, at which time you can go back to the salon and get a fresh new look.

If your nails start looking a little dull before then, restore their glossiness with a high-shine topcoat.

Professional Removal

We’ve all been there… your nails have grown out halfway up your nails, one’s broken and another one has chipped. That doesn’t mean you should start pulling and tugging them off! Reduce the damage that nail extensions create on your natural nails by getting them removed professionally.

A qualified nail tech will remove the extensions with acetone for a small price so that your natural nails don’t have to suffer!

So now you know all of the steps to create the perfect nail care routine, you can show off your gorgeous manicures to the world. Remember to head to our online shop for products such as cuticle oil and nail files, that’ll keep your fingernails looking fresh.

gel nails

Gel Nails vs Acrylics: What Are The Main Differences?

Every year, new nail treatments pop up and take the beauty industry by storm. But no matter what trends are invented, a nail tech will always need to know the difference between Gel nails and Acrylics. Gel and Acrylic nails have been popular for decades, so they’re an essential part of a nail tech’s skillset.

But what’s the difference between their processes, application and removal? We’re going to answer all of these questions and more in this quick guide to Gel and Acrylic nails.

Gel Nails

Gel nails come in two forms: soft and hard gel. You can create nail extensions with hard gel, whereas clients who want a more natural look will opt for soft gel.

The application of gel polish is known for being quite harsh on natural nails, due to its chemical makeup. Use a UV light throughout the application of both soft and hard gel nails to cure and harden them. UV rays can cause skin damage so you can use an LED lamp instead to protect the client’s hands.

A good application of gel nails should last 3-4 weeks if the client is careful not to chip or break them. Treatments usually cost upwards of £25 and more if the client requests embellishments or nail art.

Prep

Prepping the nails is an essential part of any nail treatment. You should complete the following steps to ensure the nails are ready for the application so you can achieve the best results.

  • File and buff – this removes any harsh edges and nicks to create a smooth surface for the product to sit on.
  • Push and trim the cuticles – neatening the cuticles is a must. Use a cuticle pusher and nipper to reduce and remove the cuticles. Not only does this improve the appearance of the nails, but it also stimulates nail growth.
  • Basecoat – applying a basecoat will protect the natural nails from staining and create a better base for the product to stick to.

Soft Gel

Soft gel is pretty simple to get to grips with. As long as your painting is neat and you take your time, you should get the hang of it quickly. Follow this straightforward run-through:

  • Pick the desired colour – there are endless amounts of colours to choose from, i.e. glitter, metallic, neon, matte and nude.
  • Cure under the UV light after each layer – this will harden the polish and leave a glossy shine.
  • Finish with a topcoat and set the manicure with a final cure under the UV light.
  • Cuticle oil – restore moisture to the nails after all of the filing and cutting with a good quality cuticle oil. Massage the oil into the fingertips.
  • Cuticle Oil 30ml

    £4.95
    Add to basket

Hard Gel

Hard gel is ready to apply straight from the pot, making it an easier craft to master than acrylics. Here’s a simple step by step of how to apply hard gel extensions:

  • Apply nail forms to the tip of each natural nail – these will act as a guide for the shape and length of the gel extension.
  • Apply the first layer of hard gel – this is a ready-made formula so you can simply apply it with a brush. Work in thin layers to achieve precise results and avoid making the nail too thick.
  • Cure under the UV lamp – every time you paint a new layer, you need to cure it under the light. As a result, the gel nail will become more durable and last longer.
  • Apply 1-2 more layers of hard gel and cure each time under the UV lamp.
  • Paint the hard gel with a gel polish of your client’s choice and finish with a topcoat.
  • Cure the gel polish under the UV lamp and apply cuticle oil.
  • Clear UV/LED Hard Gel

Acrylics

Acrylic powder and solvent form the basis of acrylic nails. Acrylic is perfect for creating super-long extensions, however, it’s also possible to achieve natural looks. It all depends on what your client prefers.

Acrylics can be applied using acrylic tips or nail forms. Acrylic tips make it easier to form the extension, while nail forms leave all the moulding down to you. Whichever method you choose is purely down to preference.

These nails are known for being durable and hard wearing. If applied professionally, they won’t lift or break off the natural nail. Depending on the rate of nail growth, acrylics should generally last for four weeks. Like gel nails, acrylic extensions cost upwards of £25, with additional costs for different designs and embellishments.

Prep

The prep required for acrylic nails is the same as that of gel. See above for the steps.

Acrylic tips

  • Glue nail tips to the natural nail with an adhesive – these are clear plastic tips that form the extension.
  • Cut the nail tips down to the desired length with nail scissors.
  • File to the requested shape, e.g. coffin, stiletto, square – each nail should be identical and have neat edges.
  • Dip your acrylic brush in the solvent, then into the acrylic powder and apply the mixture onto nails.
  • Mould the acrylic until it’s smooth – work in small sections from the base of the nail to the tip until you achieve the desired nail shape and coverage.
  • Once hardened, file the acrylic to neaten the shape and smooth out any lumps.
  • Remove any file dust with spray clean to prep the nails for gel polish.
  • Paint the acrylics with gel polish and set under the UV light.
  • Finish with a top coat and cuticle oil.

Moulded Acrylics

The processes for moulded acrylics are similar to that of hard gel, except you have to create the acrylic mixture yourself.

  • Apply nail forms to the tip of each nail to act as guidelines for moulding the acrylic.
  • Dip your acrylic brush in the solvent, then the powder to create the acrylic mixture.
  • Mould the acrylic mixture to the desired length and shape.
  • Once set, file the nails to enhance smoothness and precision.
  • Remove file dust with spray clean to prep the nails for polish.
  • Paint the acrylics with gel polish and set each layer under the UV light.
  • Finish with a top coat and cuticle oil.

Removal

The removal of gel nails and acrylics will be tough on natural nails if not carried out by a professional. The curing process creates a durable polymer that weak solvents can’t penetrate. Cut off the bulk of the nail extension and file them down as much as possible. You must be careful not to catch the client’s skin as you file.

Wrap the nails in acetone-soaked cotton balls and foil. Leave the nails to soak for 30 minutes, then pull the foil off. The extensions should break down and crumble off the nails with ease. This causes less damage to the natural nail as there is no harsh pulling or filing involved.

Design

When it comes to soft gel nails, the scope for nail art and embellishments is a little limited. You’ll only have a small surface area to work with, so you must have a steady hand and be able to create more intricate designs.

On the other hand, hard gel and acrylic nails give you much more room to play around with nail shapes, accessories and nail art. You can hand paint designs, apply glitters and chrome powders and use accessories like rhinestones.

Building your Career in Nail Technology

Maybe you’re a nail novice, or perhaps you’ve been shaping talons for years, but now you’re unsure where your career’s headed. Wherever you are in your nail technology career, we’re here to show you how to progress to the next step so you can boost your job prospects and earnings.

We’ll cover:

What Does a Nail Tech Do?

How Do I Become Qualified in Nail Technology?

What Can I Do After I Qualify?

Let’s start from scratch…

What Does a Nail Tech Do?

As a nail tech, you should have a range of nail treatments under your belt. Such as:

  • Acrylic – the most popular treatment a nail tech can offer, you can mould acrylic nails to create long dramatic looks or more subtle manicures. They take skill and practice to master, but you can achieve stunning results.
  • Gel – gel nails are less invasive than acrylics, so many people opt for them to achieve a natural look. They’re usually a shorter treatment and less expensive than an acrylic set.
  • Fibreglass – fibreglass nails are less well known but are quickly becoming a popular treatment. They are applied using fibreglass wraps to create the extension, then shaped and painted to create the final look.
  • Nail Art – you should learn plenty of different nail art designs to wow your clients. Brushing up on these skills will help you stand out from other nail techs.

A lot of nail techs also choose to branch out into other areas of beauty, such as brows or lash extensions, as this helps to boost earnings and broaden their skillset.

The potential earnings of a nail tech begin at £12,500 and can peak anywhere up to £25,000 depending on experience, clientele and location. Salary will increase if you choose to become a salon owner or take other career paths such as teaching alongside.

The typical hours of a nail tech are around 38 to 40 hrs a week, and you can expect to work at unsociable times during evenings and weekends.

How Do I Become Qualified in Nail Technology?

nail technology

1. Qualifications

The first step to becoming a professional nail tech is to complete a qualification in nail technology. Posh look offers a range of courses for different ages and experience levels so that everyone can get the most out of their training.

Level 1 Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector

The Level 1 course is an excellent foundation for 16-18-year-olds who want to kickstart their career in nail technology. The course covers hand care, basic manicure and nail art over 22 weeks.

Students can also dip their toe in other areas of beauty such as makeup artistry and skincare, so they leave with a well-rounded knowledge of the industry.

Consequently, these skills will give students enough knowledge to be able to start work as a beauty salon assistant and get some real experience under their belt.

Level 3 Nail Technology

Our Level 3 Nail Technology qualification is open to all experience levels; however, students must be 19 years or older to enrol.

On this course, we take a more in-depth look at the different areas of nail technology, including:

  • Manicure and pedicure
  • An introduction to fibreglass and silk enhancements
  • Acrylic enhancements
  • Gel polish and nail art
  • E-file

Also, students learn how to promote stock, be mindful of their health and wellbeing and excel as a salon manager. The combination of practical and social skills that students learn allow them to further their careers in a salon or even start their own.

In just 18 weeks, students leave with a professional qualification and the confidence to promote themselves as an expert in nail technology.

NVQ Nail Services

Our NVQ Nail Services course allows students to take a look into other areas of nail technology and build upon their existing skills. You must be 19 years old and have a previous qualification in acrylic nails to enrol.

Areas that we explore in this course include:

  • Fibreglass & silk enhancements – infill /backfill & removal
  • Sculpted acrylics
  • Sculpted pink & white hard gel & natural overlay gel
  • E-file
  • Nail art
  • Photoshoot nails

Students have the opportunity to learn health and safety, as well as how to engage in promotional activities and events. Upon completion of the course, students will have several qualifications under the belt, which can boost their reputation and quality of work.

2. Gain Experience

Working with clients and practising your skills is a fundamental part of building your career in nail technology. Without experience, it’ll be hard to refine your skills and master all the different techniques you need to know.

You can start in a salon, shadowing and carrying out assistant work to see how other techs engage with clients and complete a full treatment.

On the other hand, if you’re thinking of starting a mobile business, you can practice on family and friends. Offering treatments at a discounted price is also an excellent way to build up your clientele and gain experience.

3. Private Courses

You may be at a point in your career where you have a few qualifications and experience under your belt. This is the perfect time to expand your knowledge and broaden your skills with a Posh Look private course.

Our private courses are one-to-one sessions that can be completed in a matter of days or less, allowing you to fast track your career and work around your busy schedule. Each course includes a free kit and method of assessment that’ll allow you to test your new skills.

We offer four types of private course in regards to nail technology:

What Can I Do After I Qualify?

1. Start a Mobile Business

Running a mobile business is a great way to get started in the industry and fulfil your freelance dreams. There’s little risk involved as you don’t need to rent premises and your clients’ houses are your office.

All you need to get started is equipment, a car and the determination to make your business a success. You’ll need to think about branding and getting your name out there, so create social media pages to promote your work, talk to clients efficiently and monitor the competition.

2. Open a Salon

Once you have plenty of experience, you may consider opening a salon. It’s an exciting opportunity but one that requires a lot of planning and dedication! You’ll need to think about rent, staffing, branding, and managing your finances.

Read our blog ‘How to Start A Beauty Salon: Posh Nailz 10-Step Guide’ for tips on how to open a successful beauty salon.

3. Learn to Teach

A nail tech’s career doesn’t have to end with giving manicures and pedicures forever. If you fancy switching your daily routine up, teaching may be a viable career path for you!

First off, you’ll need to get some qualifications so you can teach industry accredited courses and make sure that your students are receiving the best education. You need to complete two steps to become a teacher, and with Posh Look you can do both:

  • Teaching qualification – we offer this course on a remote basis, and students receive all the information they need to complete the written assignments. Students also have to deliver a 20-minute teaching session to complete the course and receive their certification. Once you have successfully passed your teaching qualification, you will then be able to start adding courses to your belt using our online learn to teach programme.

  • Online course – our Learn to Teach 4 Day Acrylic course is a series of comprehensive guides to help you fast track your teaching career with the convenience of learning at home in your own time. The online video course guides you step by step through everything you need to teach the 4 Day Acrylic Nails Course. You must have a teaching qualification to sign up for this course.

Work through these steps, and you’ll be well on your way to building a successful career in nail technology. For more info about any of our courses, head to the training page and find a training centre closest to you!

10 Pieces of Equipment You Need to Start A Nail Tech Business

From working hours to location, when you want to start a nail tech business, there are lots of factors you need to consider. One of the essential steps to success is building a professional kit so you can give high-quality treatments to your clients. Because what’s a nail tech without their equipment?

If you want to start a nail tech business from scratch, then you need to get the basics laid down in your kit. Once you have the initial products, you can begin building out your kit with extra colours, brushes and accessories.

We’ve compiled a list of all the essentials that you need to get started!

Nail Files

Cuticle Nippers/Pushers

start a nail tech business

Nail files are used through many stages of a nail treatment, so you need different types for each step. Disinfect your files after each use to save money on replacements.

  • Natural Nail File – this is needed to file down the natural nail and smooth out any nicks or uneven edges before applying acrylics or gel.
  • Acrylic Files – a harsher nail file can be used to shape and finish the enhancements that you’ve applied. This will create more precise edges and a professional finish.
  • E-File – some nail techs use an e-file to make their job easier. It makes the job of filing and shaping the nails much quicker and requires less manual effort. E-files are multi-purpose and different drill bits can be applied for tasks such as cleaning under the nails.

Cuticle nippers and pushers tidy the appearance of the nails before application of the product. In turn, this makes the enhancements look neater and more professional.

  • Cuticle Nipper – you can use different sized cuticle nippers for varying levels of precision. A larger set will allow you to trim bigger sections while a smaller set will make it easier to get into little nooks and be more precise.
  • Cuticle Pusher – a spoon-shaped, metal cuticle pusher is used to push down the skin that grows from the cuticle to neaten the nail’s appearance and help speed up the process of nail growth.

Basecoat/Topcoat

Gel Nail Polish

start a nail tech business
  • Basecoat – a high-quality basecoat will create a good base to work on and even out any bumps on the natural nail for the enhancement to go on top. It’ll also protect the nails from nail polish staining.
  • Topcoat – your topcoat should be fast drying and provide a high-shine, so all of your nails have a glossy finish. It’ll also reduce the risk of chipping.

You can’t start a nail tech business without plenty of polish! Gel polish can be applied straight onto the natural nail or to enhancements, such as acrylic nails.

You need to consider the vibrancy and lasting power of gel polishes before you decide which ones to purchase. Posh Nailz premium gel polishes guarantee a glamorous finish for up to 4 weeks and are used by industry professionals. Furthermore, they’re specially formulated for mixing so you can create your own shades.

You must have a wide range of colours and textures for your clients to choose from — for example, glitter, metallic and matte shades.

Nail Tips

  • Acrylic Powder – acrylic nails are more popular than ever, so you must have a wide selection of acrylic powders to choose from to create stunning looks for your clients. Coloured acrylics are perfect for creating a base colour while also forming the nail itself. You can purchase acrylic powders in all colours from the Posh Nailz website.

  • Acrylic Liquid – acrylic liquid is mixed with acrylic powder to create the nail itself. You can buy a large bottle of acrylic liquid, so you don’t have to keep repurchasing.

Nail tips are applied to the tip of the natural nail before acrylic to determine the shape and length of the nails. You can buy nail tips in specific forms, such as stiletto, or buy regular square-shaped tips and cut/file them down into different shapes.

Whichever you opt for, they’re a quick solution in replacement of shaping acrylic with a brush.

Nail Brushes

Lamp

start a nail tech business

A successful nail artist needs a good selection of professional-standard brushes so they can apply enhancements with ease and precision. There are a few different types of brushes that a nail tech needs in their kit:

  • Acrylic Brush – choosing a professional standard acrylic brush is essential. It needs to be durable and shed-free, so you don’t have to keep replacing it. The better the brush, the more comfortable you’ll find it to mix acrylics and apply them smoothly.
  • Nail Art Brushes – you should have a varied selection of bigger and smaller brushes so you can create different designs. Flat tipped brushes, thin brushes, dotting tools – you need them all to avoid being caught short with a client!

A UV or LED lamp sets the nails and leaves them with a glossy finish. A lamp is an investment, so choosing the right one is essential. There are many types on the market that’ll give you different levels of convenience, finish and client comfort:

  • Standard LED lamp – this’ll have to be plugged into a mains socket so you’ll always need to be near a power outlet when doing treatments. If you’re a mobile technician, this can make your set up quite hard.
  • Deluxe LED lamp – the deluxe lamp has a timer display so you can easily see how long the nails have been under the light. Also has to be plugged into a mains socket.
  • Cordless UV LED lamp – with the cordless lamp you can work anywhere without a plug holding you back. The UV LED combination also allows you to set any polish, making it suitable for all treatments. It can be fully charged in 2 hours and lasts for 2 hours, with different time settings that you can set with the touch of a button. The cordless feature also means you can easily set pedicures on the floor.

Nail Accessories

Cuticle Oil

start a nail tech business

Nail accessories are a great addition to your kit as you’ll want to create impressive designs and offer different looks. Although they’re not essential to start a nail tech business, but as your clientele grows, you’ll need to expand your kit.

  • Glitter and Rhinestones – Glitter and rhinestones are inexpensive and add a glamorous touch to any nail enhancement. During peak seasons such as Summer and Christmas, your clients will expect dazzling looks, so it’s a good idea to have plenty of options in your kit.
  • Metallic Powder – Metallic pigments can be applied over the top of polish to create a more exciting look. The high shine creates an eye-catching effect and is very popular on social media.
  • 3D pieces – When it comes to nails, some clients think: the chunkier, the better. You can create impressive looks with different 3D accessories, i.e. gold stars and moons have been a popular trend recently.

Moisturising the cuticles is the final step of any manicure. A high-quality cuticle oil will soothe your client’s nails after all of the cutting and filing. As a result, it’ll also leave them looking extra glossy.

Additionally, cuticle oil is inexpensive and will last you a long time if you don’t go overboard applying it, making it affordable.

-Soak the nails in warm water

-Remove remnants of old nail polish, then file and buff the nails for a smooth base

-Ask the client if they have any known allergies eg.latex

-Have a consultation about the type of nail shape and design they want

-Clip the nails down and gently push the cuticles back to neaten the edges

TOP TIP: Don’t cut the cuticles because this can hinder nail growth and cause them to grow back harder.

What are the different types of manicures?

Manicures come in all shapes, sizes and designs. The main types of manicures are:

  • Acrylic
  • Gel
  • Dip powder

Whatever your client opts for, it’s essential to be clued up on every kind of application, so we’re going to take a look at each one in-depth.

Acrylic

Acrylic nails have become increasingly popular in recent years as people strive for impressive manicures, with plenty of length and precision.

For acrylic application, you’ll need a variety of equipment to get started. Check out our blogs on Nail Technician Equipment for an extensive list of everything you should have in your kit.

The benefits of acrylic nails:

-Durable and hard to break

-Large surface area to create intricate nail art

-Can create super long nails easily

You can apply acrylics with extension tips or shape them yourself with acrylic overlay. Extension tips are applied to the ends of the natural nail with glue and cut down to the desired length. Acrylic is then applied over the top, from the base of the nail to the tip of the extension, and filed down to create the basic nail shape.

For the application of acrylic overlay, nail forms are applied under the natural nail to act as a guide for shaping the acrylic. Once a general nail shape has been achieved, a file is used to create more precision and clean up the edges of the nails.

Acrylic nails can be formed of coloured acrylic or clear acrylic with a gel polish colour over the top.

Acrylic nails are dried under a UV light for a glossy finish. After the application, apply cuticle oil to soothe the nails and add extra shine.

Gel

types of manicures

Gel nails are often used to create a more natural-looking manicure, although you can offer hard gel extensions too.

The benefits of gel nails:

-They cause less damage to the natural nail than acrylics

-Much quicker to apply

-Protect natural nails from dirt and pollution

-Can create nail art with different colours

A base coat should always be applied before colour, to prep the nail and create a smooth base. Once applied, a colour of choice is painted over the top in layers and dried under a UV light to create a glossy finish.

You can purchase gel nail polish in a wide variety of colours, including neons and shimmers.

Gel extensions are created using hard gel. The application technique is similar to that of acrylic, except gel is more flexible and easier to work with. Gel extensions are perfect for clients who want length but enjoy the benefits of gel nails.

Dip Powder

A less mainstream option, dip powder nails are created by dipping the nail in a fine loose powder that adds pigment. The nails are dipped and coated with a clear polish multiple times until the desired level of pigment is reached.

Although this is a quick and easy process, the main issue with dip powder nails is hygiene. There are significant problems with dipping multiple fingers into one pot of powder, so it’s hard to perform this type of manicure if you have a lot of clients.

What are the different nail shapes?

types of manicures

Whether you like long talons or prefer a classic, short look, there’s a nail shape out there for everyone. Practice different nail shapes so you can offer all of them to your clients.

Coffin nails, (not as scary as they sound) are associated with the funeral prop because they taper off at the end and have a flat tip, just like a coffin. This shape is extremely popular and you’ll find it’s a regular request at the salon.

Stiletto nails are for the extroverts amongst us who want fierce nails to match their personality. A lot of people like to go suuuuper long with their stiletto nails; however, they can look just as good at a shorter length too.

Square nails are self-explanatory. Get the nail file at the ready, because this shape is all about sharp, precise edges.

Round nails create a cute, natural look and are often paired with nude colours or french manicures for a soft and girly effect.

Oval nails are similar to rounded nails, but they taper more at the tip, while squoval nails are a more boxy version of the oval.

Lipstick nails aren’t very common and are certainly not to everyone’s taste, but they’re worth a mention. The tip of the nail finishes at a diagonal angle, mimicking the shape of a lipstick bullet.

What are the different nail styles?

Texture

types of manicures

Play around with matte polishes to create different textures. Use a mixture of matte and glossy nails in one manicure to make it look more interesting.

Metallic and foil nails are pretty easy to get to grips with once you have the equipment. Use foils like gold leaf to create pretty designs and accent nails. Metallic polishes and chrome powders will add an extra touch of glamour to an otherwise standard manicure.

Transparent nails are a super popular trend at the minute and look impressive when embellished with rhinestones or other accessories.

Acrylic Sculpting

Acrylic sculpting is perfect for creating 3D designs that will really wow your clients. It’s a pretty advanced skill to learn, so it’s better to get to grips with the basics of acrylic application before attempting this. With practice, you can sculpt anything from roses to bows.

Nail Art

Handpainted nail art is an impressive service you can offer to clients. From flowers to intricate patterns and designs, you can practice painting anything you like. It’s a good idea to learn popular designs; for example, flames have been a recent trend on the nail scene.

The french manicure is a classic design that has remained popular for decades. A twist on this classic is the French fade. This is created by blending coloured acrylics into one another, so it can be a little trickier to perfect if you’re a novice at acrylic application.

Similarly, ombre nails are created by blending different coloured acrylics into each other for a bright and stunning effect.

Rhinestones are perfect for making any manicure look expensive and to create an eye-catching 3D effect. They’re great for special occasions or for when you fancy injecting some glamour into your nails.
